Augusta May “Gussie” Harris, 92, of Oblong, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at 8:24 p.m. at the Crawford Memorial Hospital, Robinson, Illinois.
Born in Douglas County, IL. on May 30, 1921, she was the daughter of Robert Leonidas “Bob” Maulding and Noma (Tolley) Maulding. Gussies was a graduate of the Casey High School class of 1939; a member of the Pleasant Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church and attended EUM Church, Oblong, Illinois. Before marriage, Gussie worked at “the old movie theater” in Oblong and O. F. Edwards Drug Store in Oblong, Illinois. She was a factory worker most of her life and retired from Victor-Dana, Robinson, Illinois. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, cross word puzzels and most of all loving her children and grandchildren.
On May 5, 1947, she married Chester M. “Chet” Harris and he preceded her in death on January 31, 2003. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Brad and Debbie Harris, Clay City, Illinois; Randy and Brenda Harris, Oblong, Illinois; and a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Phil Rich, Oblong, Illinois; eight grandchildren: Levi Harris and partner Jacob Trimble, Chicago, Illinois; Laura and Adam Garrett, St. Louis, Missouri; Michael Harris, Oblong, Illinois; Emily Harris, Oblong, Illinois; Jennifer and Chad O’Dell, Oblong, Illinois; Jessica Cooley, Robinson, Illinois; Melissa and Chris Cupp, Hardinville, Illinois; Jamie and Tim Rains, Hutsonville, Illinois: nine great-grandchildren: Levi Cupp and Lucas Cupp, both of Hardinville, Illinois; Dessa Cooley and Kristopher Cooley, both of Robinson, Illinois; Samuel Rains and Henry Rains, both of Hutsonville, Illinois; Blake Vest, Oblong, Illinois; Chalyn O’Dell; and soon to be Baby Garrett due in February 2013; a sister-in-law Isabel Clark, Newton, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.
Gussie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, an infant son, an infant daughter, one brother Don W. Maulding, in 2001; a granddaughter-in-law, Shara Harris.
